Police broke the lock on the municipal office that businessmen in Rajbiraj Bazaar in Saptari had put up on Tuesday afternoon demanding the title deed of their ‘Bitauri’ land. Angry businessmen protested on the streets and even closed Rajbiraj Bazaar.

They said that the police had forcibly confiscated the businessmen who were on hunger strike demanding that the people’s representatives take the initiative to address their demands. The businessmen, who started the protest by forming a movement mobilization committee, accused some locals of influencing the people’s representatives and employees and refusing to give them the title deed even after they had already received it.

They had been staging a phased protest targeting the municipal office for the past three weeks for the title deed. Chief District Officer Tubaraj Pokharel, who visited the hunger strike site last Sunday, informed that the ward office, municipality or land administration office could not solve the problem of the title deed of the ‘Bitauri’ land. Since it could not be resolved from here, Pradya Pokharel had already written to the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, Federal Affairs and General Administration, and the Ministry of Home Affairs, and had suggested to the agitating parties to postpone the hunger strike to attract further attention.

Earlier on Saturday, Minister for Youth, Labor and Employment Ramji Yadav, who is also an MP here, had also informed them through a video call that the problems could not be resolved at the local level, and had already coordinated with the committee formed a week ago to resolve the land-related problems and had urged them to come to Kathmandu and discuss with the committee. However, the businessmen who will continue the lockout and hunger strike until concrete initiatives are taken have been repeating their stance. The closure of the municipal office at the end of the fiscal year is affecting work.
