A fight broke out between the party workers as the dispute within the party over the selection of representatives escalated ahead of the district convention of the National Independent Party Parsa.
Some party workers were injured in the incident. The dispute between the two parties escalated on Saturday while the election process was underway at the Gateway Hotel near the District Administration Office in Birgunj-9 in preparation for the district convention to be held on Sunday.
One party had demanded to postpone the convention, expressing dissatisfaction over the selection of representatives for the district convention. The dispute escalated and the workers got into a fight. Three people, including Mahadev Prasad Kurmi and Gautam Shrestha, were injured in the incident.
On Saturday afternoon, party member Mahadev Prasad Kurmi, central general convention representative Sudhir Patel and others had submitted a memorandum to Madhesh Province Vice President and Election Committee member Radhika Neupane, demanding to postpone the district convention. They have accused the party of district president and Parsa-1 MP Hari Pant of appointing only his close associates as representatives, contrary to the party's statute and procedures. The list of representatives made public for the district convention also included representatives from various departments, and demanded that details of when and how those departments were formed be made public.
The memorandum states that the convention should be held only after transparent information about the decision on department formation, minutes, and the process of nominating representatives is made public. The election committee suspended the election process for about two hours after receiving the memorandum. However, eyewitnesses say that as soon as the process resumed, an argument broke out between the two parties in the hotel premises.
The argument inside the hotel escalated and spilled over to the street. They had been fighting and even hitting each other with helmets. The police who reached the spot also resorted to lathicharge. Election committee sources said that the election process has been suspended for the time being and the remaining process will resume from 8 am on Sunday.
