Birgunj Metropolitan City Mayor Rajeshman Singh, who was arrested on charges of document-related offenses (forgery) and aiding in obtaining citizenship based on false information, was released on Tuesday after posting bail set by the court. Singh was arrested at 6:15 am on Tuesday from the Jungle Resort in Thori, Parsa.
After being produced before the district court, an order was issued to release Singh on bail after a statement and a closed argument. The bench of District Judge Gayatri Prasad Regmi had ordered a total bail of Rs 400,000 in the document forgery case and Rs 15,000 in the case of obtaining citizenship by giving false information. Singh was released from the court in the evening after posting bail as per the court order.
Advocates Kamal Mohan Pokharel and Shiva Koirala argued on behalf of Singh in the closed argument. Before Mayor Singh was released, the police had called a doctor from Narayani Hospital to the court to examine Singh. Mayor Singh was arrested on the basis of an arrest warrant issued by the court.
According to those close to him, Mayor Singh had reached the capital Kathmandu 3/4 days before the arrest warrant was issued. On 13 Jestha, the day after the arrest warrant was issued, a photo of him standing in front of the main building of the district court was made public on social media. But he did not appear in court that day. After that, a photo of him participating in a religious ceremony organized in a city called Siwan in Bihar, India was made public on social media.
Singh's personal secretary Satyaraj Ghimire was taken into custody by the police for questioning from the district court premises at 10 am on Monday and released in the evening. Mayor Singh is accused of helping someone else's daughter obtain citizenship, birth certificate and other government documents by pretending to be his own daughter on the basis of fake documents. A case related to this allegation is currently pending in court.
This case is related to the citizenship issued in 2075 BS. The citizenship of Rubina Shrestha, said to be a resident of Birgunj-3, has Rajeshman Singh mentioned as her father. The complainants, however, have alleged that Rubina is not the ‘biological daughter’ of Mayor Singh and have alleged that the documents used to obtain citizenship were forged.
The complainant, Liaqat Ali of Birgunj, had filed a complaint in this regard with various bodies. After that, the investigation process was initiated through the Ministry of Home Affairs, District Administration Office and the police. The case reached the court after questions were raised about the details, recommendations and related documents used to obtain citizenship during the investigation.
After the citizenship dispute became public, Singh had claimed that Rubina was the daughter born to his second wife during the investigation. After that, the case gained further attention when the woman mentioned as the second wife filed a divorce case in the court. The credibility of Singh’s claim and the documents related to it was also investigated. After being released on bail on Tuesday, Singh will now face the case on a scheduled date.
