‘The landowner has dug a 5-foot deep pit with a dozer while trying to remove the fruits and physical structures in the market,’ said Bhupaneshwor Purve, secretary of the Fruit and Vegetable Traders Association, to the media. ‘The vacating of the market has been obstructed. The police have also supported the landowner.’

250 fruit traders here trade from this fruit market. According to Purve, 50-60 fruit trucks from India come to the market daily and fruit is traded from here to Birgunj, Hetauda and Chitwan.
The fruit traders have been protesting with the landowner with two demands. One is to remove the obstruction to vacate the market and the second is to extend the time to vacate the market by at least two months as it is the peak mango season.
Janakpurdham Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Surendra Bhandari alleged that fruit traders have been evicted from the agricultural market in Hatiya on Friday and have set up a market on their own land. ‘This is also where the eviction has taken place in a humiliating manner,’ said President Bhandari. ‘The government should pay attention to the agricultural produce market.’ However, only eviction is being done here.’ Bhandari demanded that more time be added to the mutual understanding as it is not possible to clear the fruit market in 5-10 days.

However, fruit businessman Rohit Prasad Thakur said that since the land lease agreement does not mention what to do with the temporary physical structure built by the fruit businessman, he should be allowed to take it. ‘We have requested many times to collect the remaining rent.’ However, the landowner is only insisting that they vacate,’ Thakur said.
