Parsa National Park has proposed the construction of two overpasses on the Pathlaiya-Amaleganj road section of the Tribhuvan Highway, which is a traditional wildlife trail.

Santosh Kumar Bhagat, Conservation and Information Officer of Parsa National Park, informed that the road department is preparing to expand this section of the Tribhuvan Highway, and the park administration has made this suggestion after seeking suggestions from stakeholders including the park administration, Nepali Army, local residents and others before the expansion.

The department had recently sought suggestions from stakeholders on various options to minimize damage to wildlife on the Tribhuvan Highway, which passes through a very sensitive area of the park. ‘The park administration has suggested the construction of at least two overpasses on the 8-kilometer section of the Tribhuvan Highway from Pathlaiya to Amaleganj,’ he said, ‘The government policy also When building any infrastructure in a forest area, wildlife-friendly infrastructure must be built.’

This 8-km stretch of the highway is considered an area with high wildlife traffic. There is also a traditional trekking route for wild elephants native to the park in this section. Groups of elephants often go on long journeys on their own trekking routes every year. In the months of Shrawan/Bhadra, elephants from the park and groups of elephants coming here from the east also cross the highway to make their journey. In such a situation, when vehicles come on the road, both wildlife and passengers in the vehicle are at risk.

Wild elephants that have separated from the group are often seen on this road section. In this way, when wild animals including elephants come on the highway area, passengers are also at risk. From time to time, there are incidents of wild animals including tigers, leopards, monkeys, and wild boars dying after colliding with vehicles. Bhagat said that it has been suggested that the proposed overpass can be made in two sections. ‘Since a single overpass can disrupt the traditional footpaths of wildlife, we have suggested that it be made in two sections,’ he said. ‘In this way, wildlife can travel easily and safely through the overpass that suits them.’

He said that after encircling the park in other areas besides the overpass, wildlife will travel only through the fixed path of the overpass and there will be no risk of accidents as they are not likely to come onto the highway.
