The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has registered a corruption case against Mahendra Kumar Das, the chief engineer of Nepal Electricity Authority Kanchanpur Distribution Center, Saptari, who was arrested while accepting a bribe. On Monday, a corruption case was registered against Das in a special court.
A complaint was filed that Das had demanded a bribe from a service recipient to provide electricity to a transformer installed for a charging station. The Commission's Itahari-based team deployed on the same basis had arrested Das on Chaitra 23 while accepting a bribe of Rs 140,000 from a hotel in Hanumannagar Kankalini Municipality-1, Bhardaha.
It was found that Das had bargained to provide electricity to a transformer installed as per the rules and threatened to cut off the electricity if the bribe was not paid, and a case was registered against him under Section 3, Sub-section 1 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 2059 BS, demanding compensation, imprisonment and fine accordingly.
