Family members and relatives of the accused in the murder of 65-year-old Sheikh Matin of Paroha Municipality-2, Jingdwa, sat on a dharna near the gate of the district court on Monday, holding placards demanding justice and expressing anger.
The victim's relatives and local youth sat on a dharna outside the gate of the court, which is considered the last refuge for the victim to get justice, carrying placards reading 'Take action against the murderer, give justice to the deceased Sheikh Matin, end injustice, give justice to the victim'.
According to Sheikh Asim, a relative of the deceased, on Chaitra 21, 2081, while a discussion was going on in Paroha Municipality-2, Rautahat, 65-year-old Matin was brutally beaten up by locals Sheikh Fazle Haque, Sheikh Nathuni, Sheikh Javed, Masum, Sheikh Shakil and Sheikh Roz Muhammad over a simple matter. Matin, who was seriously injured due to the beating, was taken to Garuda, Chandranigahapur and Birgunj for further treatment. Asim informed that he died on the way to Kathmandu on Chaitra 23 after treatment was not possible there.
Sadre Alam, the son of the deceased, said that a complaint has been registered against six people involved in the incident with the Garuda Area Police for the crime of manslaughter. ‘We had to go through a lot of trouble to register a complaint with the police demanding action against those involved in the murder of our father,’ he said, ‘Even now, Garuda police has produced one person overnight. This should be investigated.’
After the incident, the victim has become suspicious after Sheikh Roz Muhammad of Paroha Municipality-1, one of the absconders, appeared at night a week ago. The victim, Sadre Alam, said that he staged a protest outside the court with a warning as he heard that the police were suspicious and that the case had been weakened with the statement of the perpetrator. Area Police Garuda DSP Shankar Prasad Acharya claimed that no effort was left to provide justice to the victim in the Sheikh Mateen case.
‘The allegation that he was brought before the court overnight is completely wrong,’ he said, ‘We have completed all the work as per the law in this case and submitted the case. No one should have doubted this.’ After the incident, Sheikh Roz Mohammed, who is absconding, was brought before the district court on Monday, but the court has stated that the hearing will be held only on Tuesday as the statement could not be completed.
