A successful surgery for the complex eye disease 'keratoconus' has been performed at Drishti Eye Hospital in Birgunj. The hospital administration has claimed that this is the first surgery of its kind in Madhesh Pradesh for this disease, which causes the pupil of the eye to become thin and pointed.
A team led by hospital doctor Dr. Manish Khatiwada performed the surgery on the left eye of 16-year-old Ashish Kumar from West Champaran, Bihar, India on Thursday.
The surgery was successfully completed in about an hour, said Dr. Khatiwada. Initially, the teenager, who had cataracts in both eyes, was diagnosed with this disease during an eye examination.
Since cataracts cannot be treated without treating 'keratoconus', this disease was treated first and his cataract surgery could be performed after three months, says Dr. Khatiwada. ‘We have made the pupil of the eye thinner and less likely to tear by corneal cross-linking,’ he said, ‘In this way, we have strengthened his pupil.’
This is the first time that the hospital has started the pupil transplant service 6 months ago. Dr. Khatiwada informed. Along with pupil transplant, the hospital has also started providing services such as improving the condition of the oil and tear glands in dry eyes, and contact lens transplantation.
As Nepal’s eye hospitals provide quality and relatively cheap services, the attraction of Indian patients to Nepal’s eye hospitals is continuously increasing.
