The demolition of structures within 25 meters of the road in the Birgunj metropolitan area has begun since Sunday morning.

The removal of encroached structures on the Gandak-Miteri Bridge road area under the Tribhuvan Highway began at 5:30 am.

The Road Division Hetauda Office started removing the structures by using about 1 dozen dozers/excavators on Sunday. The campaign to remove encroached structures has been launched under the protection of the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Municipal Police.

Engineer Bhola Sah of the Road Division Office Hetauda informed that the demolition of houses and towers built encroaching on the road has begun since Sunday morning in accordance with the previous Supreme Court verdict and the decision of the federal government. He said that there are about 1,000 to 1,200 houses and towers from Gandak Chowk to Miteri Bridge.

The owners of the houses whose houses have been demolished have complained that they have been unfairly demolished without even giving them 24 hours to do so. Kanhaiyalal Keshari, a homeowner in Ghantaghar, said that the sudden announcement by the District Administration Office at 6 pm on Saturday and the demolition of the structures from 4:30 am on Sunday caused problems, especially for traders.

Over 1,000 houses and shacks being removed from encroached areas in Birgunj

The District Administration Office, Parsa, had issued a notice on Saturday evening and directed the removal of structures within the road area from Nepal-India Miteri Bridge to Gandak Canal Chowk under the Tribhuvan Highway.
The administration had stated that it had decided to remove encroached structures within the 25/25 meter boundary of the road on the right and left sides as per the road standards in that area in accordance with the letter from the Road Division Office, Hetauda and in coordination with the Birgunj Metropolitan City.

It was warned that the houses, shops and other structures within the specified limits should be removed by 4:30 am on Sunday or they will be removed by force.  In the notice signed by Assistant Chief District Officer Binod Kumar Pokharel, political parties, public representatives, civil society and the general public were urged to cooperate in removing road encroachments.

Birgunj Metropolitan City Mayor  Rajeshman Singh has also requested the city residents to follow the notice issued by the Road Division Office, Hetauda and security agencies through social media. Immediately after the notice, shopkeepers who were at home, especially in the Ghantaghar to Dakshin Bazaar area of the metropolis, tried to shift their shop goods in a hurry since Saturday evening.

But traders and businessmen have expressed their anger after the dozers started moving since Sunday morning without removing the goods. After dozers were used in places on the main road from Gandak to Miteri Bridge to remove the structures, the traffic system on the main road of the metropolis has become chaotic . Electricity and internet services have also been disrupted.
