The East-West Highway has been blocked since 4 am on Thursday after a diversion in the Chapini River in Hariwan, Sarlahi, was washed away.

The highway was blocked after heavy rains overnight washed away the Chapini River between Tinghere and Basatol in Hariwan. The highway is being upgraded to four lanes. Vehicles were moving through the diversion as work was underway to repair the old bridge and build another bridge nearby.

Police have said that the repair work on the old bridge has been stopped after the diversion was washed away and soil is being filled in to allow traffic to operate from the same bridge.

Passengers and drivers of night buses are facing problems after getting stuck in the hour-long jam. Small vehicles are moving through the village's internal roads via Chapini. It is expected to take time to rebuild the washed-out diversion.

Box culverts and bridges are currently being constructed at dozens of places on the East-West Highway in Sarlahi, allowing vehicles to pass through the diversion. Vehicles are also having difficulty navigating through diversions at other locations as the rain causes water to freeze and become muddy.
