The work of installing the under-construction bailey bridge on the Tilabey River in the Gandak Canal is progressing at a slow pace. Due to the delay of the contractor company, the work of installing the bridge is progressing at a slow pace. So far, the physical progress of the work has reached only about 30 percent.

The contract for the bailey bridge, which is being constructed under the Narayani Irrigation Management Office, Birgunj, has been taken by Mamata Enterprises and Construction Pvt. Ltd. Lokanthali Bhaktapur. According to the office, the total cost of the project is about Rs 24.66 million, 812. According to the agreement, the construction work should start from December 15, 2025, and be completed by May 15, 2026. However, since the pace of the work is very slow, there is uncertainty about its completion on the specified date.

Three years ago, a problem arose in traffic after the flood in Ashar damaged the RCC bridge at the same location. After the damage to the bridge's pillars, vehicular movement has been restricted keeping in mind the potential risk. However, pedestrians, cyclists and motorbike users are still using the bridge at their own risk.

About 40 percent of the district's residents commute through this bridge, which is located on the approach road of the Gandak Canal connecting the district headquarters Birgunj with the north-western region. Locals have been suffering due to the delay in the reconstruction of the bridge. According to locals, if the bridge is further damaged, the siphon of the Gandak Canal may be affected and the canal system itself may be blocked.

Site engineer of the contractor company Manoj Kumar Mandal claimed that the work will be completed on the scheduled date even though the suppliers of construction materials have delayed the provision of construction materials due to the increase in fuel prices. ‘It will take only 15 days to install the bailey bridge,’ he said, ‘we can do other construction work in 15 days.’

Manoj Patel, head of the Narayani Irrigation Management Office, said that the contractor company is constantly being pressured to complete the work on time. ‘There is an appeal to complete the construction work quickly,’ he said, ‘if the bridge is not ready before the rains, the residents of rural areas will be more affected.’

The approach roads and bridges under the Gandak Canal, which India built and handed over to Nepal in 1975-76, are now being used as alternative postal routes.’ Even though the federal government has blacktopped the roads, the problem is becoming more complicated as the lack of attention to the repair and reconstruction of dilapidated bridges is making the situation worse.
