A 14-year-old Dalit girl from Surunga Municipality-3 in Saptari, who was rescued after two weeks, has been found to have been forced to go into hiding to get an abortion.
The girl, who had lost her parents, was taken into care by local Rita Yadav, and the girl had been living in her house as a domestic worker for the past 8 years. When the girl suddenly disappeared on Chaitra 3, relatives went to the house of the girl's two sisters to inquire.
However, when the girl was not found at her sister's house and her sisters were also out of contact, the relatives filed a complaint at the Area Police Office Kadarbona. When she spoke to her sister, she said that Maheshwar had been sexually abusing her for 3/4 months and that she was 2 months pregnant,' the girl's sister told 'Ekantipur'. 'When we sisters said that we would return home from Lahan, Maheshwar threatened to trap us and did everything.' She said that Maheshwar had repeatedly threatened her not to tell the police or anyone else about the abortion. 'He was not letting her return home, showing fear and intimidation.' After he said he would listen to her, he left his sister (the girl) there and let the two sisters return,' she said, 'After returning, we went to the police and narrated the incident, and the police went there with us and rescued our sister.' The girl who was rescued last Friday has now been sent to a safe house after undergoing a health check-up at Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital, Rajbiraj.
Hospital sources also said that the girl who was brought for a health check-up had already had an abortion. District Police Office spokesperson DSP Dambar Bahadur Puri said that an investigation is underway into the incident. 'We have received the girl's health check-up report, but we cannot reveal more about the incident as the investigation is ongoing,' he said, 'The accused are absconding. They are being searched for.'
The victim's family and Dalit leaders here accused the police of trying to acquit the accused. ‘The police say they have registered a case based on the statements taken from the girl’s sisters, but they do not want to mention the details of the case to the family and themselves,’ said Dalit leader Salita Sada. ‘The sisters who gave the statement are illiterate. There is no statement as per their statement.’
The girl’s sisters also urged the police to clarify the details of the case to their literate relatives. Rita, who has taken the responsibility of protecting the girl, is a government employee. She works as a buyer in the same ward office. However, she has not been able to be contacted since the incident.
