The investigation committee formed to investigate the discovery of banned drugs, marijuana, a hookah and a mobile phone in Rajbiraj Prison in Saptari has not been able to find out the reason. 10 grams of marijuana, a hookah and a mobile phone were seized during a check on the prisoners there on the morning of Magh 20.
To investigate the incident, the District Administration Office had formed an investigation committee led by the administrative officer, including the head of the prison, the ASI of the District Police Office and the deputy sub-inspector of the administration. However, despite a long investigation, the committee has not been able to find out who brought the marijuana, hookah and mobile phones there.
Chief District Officer Tubaraj Pokharel said that the committee has submitted a report mentioning the problems and errors seen in the prison. ‘The police investigation will show exactly how the materials reached there,’ he said, ‘We have already sent some employees and police to the department for transfer to see if there is any setting-collusion.’ He said that the prison department has already been requested to fulfill the issues mentioned in the
report, including modernizing security checks, increasing the use of CCTV and testing machines, and increasing the necessary number of security personnel. ‘We expect that the report will be implemented and that there will be an improvement in prison management,’ said Pradya Pokharel.
The banned materials were recovered when Sumit Mandal of Mahadeva Rural Municipality-1, Suraj Raut of Rajbiraj Municipality-6, and Abhishek Mandal of Ward No. 5, who were living in the same room in ‘A Block’, were checked. After the incident, Sumit, who is serving a 4-year sentence for theft, arms and drug trafficking, and Suraj, who is serving a 3-year and 4-month sentence for dereliction of duty, have been sent to Rautahat Prison, while Abhishek, who is being held for fraud and citizenship, is here pending permission from the department.
Meanwhile, the police have also started an investigation using the 'call history' of the recovered mobile phone, but have not been able to reveal the reason yet. District Police Office spokesperson DSP Dambar Bahadur Puri said that an investigation is underway. 'We are currently in the process of investigating,' he said.
