The work on the plastic waste processing plant under construction at the waste management center of Birgunj Metropolitan City has reached its final stage. The plant has been built with the aim of processing and reusing plastic waste collected from the metropolitan area in a scientific manner.
It is said that the metropolitan city is constructing a modern technology-equipped plant within the processing center in line with its policy of making waste management sustainable, scientific and environmentally friendly. Once the plant is operational, the plastic waste collected daily within Birgunj Metropolitan City will be separated, processed and converted into reusable materials.
According to Rakesh Sah, Head of the Forest and Environment Branch of the Metropolitan City, the plant is being built with an investment of about Rs 40 million by Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd. According to him, the construction work has reached its final stage and preparations are underway to bring it into operation soon.
The plant under construction will have the capacity to process about 20 metric tons of plastic waste daily. Currently, about 60 to 65 tons of waste is being collected daily in the Birgunj Metropolitan City. Among them, arrangements will be made to separate plastic waste and process it through the plant.
The project implementation was started after a tripartite agreement was signed between Birgunj Metropolitan City, Zero Waste Initiative Nepal and Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd. on waste management and environmental protection in the month of Asoj. According to the agreement, the goal is to make the metropolis's waste management system more effective with investment and cooperation from the private sector.
On Wednesday, a team including Metropolitan City Mayor Rajeshman Singh and Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd.'s Industry Chief Suresh Kaji Maharjan reached the construction site and inspected the progress of the plant. The team took information about the status of the construction work, technical aspects and operation process.
After the construction is completed, the plant will be handed over to Birgunj Metropolitan City. After that, the Metropolitan City will take over the responsibility of operating and managing the plant, while Zero Waste Initiative Nepal will manage the technical manpower.
During the on-site inspection, Metropolitan City Mayor Singh said that the plant was built in accordance with the long-term goal of making Birgunj a waste-free and green city. According to him, this project will usher in a new phase in plastic waste management. ‘Now, the metropolis is moving towards using waste as a resource rather than just a problem,’ he said.
According to the metropolis, once the plant is operational, waste collected from across the city will be classified, separated and processed into plastic waste, and converted into reusable materials. This is expected to improve the waste management system and make a long-term contribution to environmental protection.
Surya Nepal Pvt. Ltd. Industry Chief Maharjan said that the company has invested in the project under its social responsibility. According to him, the industry has collaborated in this project with a commitment to be responsible towards society and the environment along with profit-oriented business.
