Former Minister for Forests and Environment Nawal Kishore Shah (Sudi) has been found to have kept a licensed rifle at home even during the election.

On Magh 6, the District Administration Office had issued a notice to surrender licensed weapons to conduct the elections in a peaceful, free, clean and fear-free environment. However, former Minister Sah has not yet surrendered the rifle.

When he was a minister from the Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal, he had mentioned that he had a 12-bore rifle when he submitted his property details to the Office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers on Baisakh 24, 2081. However, even though the District Administration issued a notice to surrender weapons by Magh 20, 2082, with a return date of one month after the election, the rifle is still at his house.

‘In order to conduct the elections in a peaceful, free, clean and fear-free environment, all concerned are hereby informed to surrender the licensed weapons within the district through the nearest police unit or to the District Police Office by Magh 20, 2082, with a return date of one month after the election,’ the notice issued by Chief District Officer Tubaraj Pokharel states.

Former minister Sah of Hanumannagar Kankalini Municipality-9 in Saptari admitted that the rifle was at home. ‘That rifle is in my custody. The rifle in the name of my son Sumit is kept at home,’ he said, ‘I am not aware of the administration’s notification to surrender the rifle.’

Sah, who won from JSP Nepal in Saptari-1 in 2079, is not contesting the election this time. This time, his son Sumit Kumar is a candidate from the Swabhiman Party. Former minister Sah says that the rifle is also in Sumit’s name. However, the administration is not aware of the fact that the rifle is at the candidate’s house.

Assistant Chief District Officer Naresh Kumar Yadav, Information Officer of the District Administration Office, said that the rifle was not in the record received from the police long ago. ‘The record of surrendering more weapons is yet to be obtained from the police,’ he said.

District Police Office spokesperson DSP Dambar Bahadur Puri said that the record of surrendering weapons has been submitted to the district administration. "We need to understand whether former Minister Sah surrendered the rifle or not. I am out now," he said, "We have also submitted the record to the administration. It is also possible to take it from there."
