Prisoners in Birgunj Prison will also be able to vote in the House of Representatives elections. According to prison jailer Babulal Regmi, a total of 58 prisoners, 20 for women and 38 for men, will be able to vote this time.
They will be allowed to vote only under the proportional system, not the direct system. The prison administration sent their names to the District Election Office after the prisoners whose names were on the voter list before coming to the prison submitted proof of it. Others could not provide proof of their names being on the voter list. There are more than 1,000 prisoners in the prison.
A polling station will be set up in the prison on election day. A polling officer will be deployed from the District Election Office to the prison.
Jailer Regmi said that the prison administration has taken this as a step to ensure the democratic rights of prisoners.
