The meeting of the Border Coordination Committee of Nepal and India held in Birgunj on Saturday has decided to completely close the border with India 72 hours before the elections to the House of Representatives.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the two countries held at the Integrated Security Checkpoint in Birgunj. The meeting agreed to adopt necessary precautions regarding the possibility of cross-border crimes during the elections and to increase necessary surveillance on the purchase, sale and consumption of alcohol and the transaction of counterfeit notes.

In the meeting, the Indian side expressed concern about the water pollution in the Sirsia River, which enters Raxaul, India, through Birgunj for the first time and urged the Nepali side to send water going to India through Nepal only after processing it at a water treatment plant. The Indian side had not spoken out on this issue in previous such meetings. In addition, the Indian side has also sought cooperation from the Nepali side to remove the encroachments on the Nepal-India border.

The meeting was attended by security officials from both countries, led by Chief District Officer of Parsa Bhola Dahal, Chief District Officer of Bara Dharmendra Kumar Mishra, and District Magistrate of East Champaran district of India, Saurabh Jorwal, and District Magistrate of West Champaran, Dharmendra Kumar. On the Nepal side, officials from all security agencies, except the Nepali Army, also participated.
