A woman has been arrested on charges of defrauding various people by claiming to be an Assistant Inspector (ASI) of Police deployed from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CIB).

Based on the complaint filed by the victims, DSP Rupa Labung informed that 35-year-old Nirmala Mahato of Kabilasi Municipality-10 Salempur of Sarlahi was arrested by the Chandranigahapur area police on Sunday. Police said that she had been defrauding people using the names of Neha, Nisha and Poonam Kumari.

Rajeshwar Sah of Lalbandi Municipality, Santosh Bahadur Bishwakarma of Chandrapur, Prabin Sah and Vijay Sah Baniya of Gujra Municipality had filed a complaint with the police a week ago alleging that Mahato had cheated them. According to the police, Nirmala had met the victim Rajeshwar a year ago in Nawalpur Bazaar of Sarlahi. Nirmala had shown the lure of releasing a Scorpio vehicle from the customs by saying that she had a good acquaintance and relationship with the Malangwa customs officials and that she was a police assistant inspector of the CIB. After that, she cheated Rajeshwar of Rs 150,000 along with his original citizenship and passport-sized photo.

Another victim, Santosh Bishwakarma, had to pay Rs 274,000 for gold and silver ornaments purchased from a jeweler's shop. According to the complaint filed with the police, Vijay Sah took a loan of Rs 500,000 from Baniya citing domestic problems.

A complaint was filed with the police alleging that victim Praveen Sah had purchased goods on credit from a grocery store and rented a Scorpio vehicle and failed to pay Rs 126,000.

An investigation is underway against the arrested Nirmala for fraud, criminal breach of trust and criminal profiteering, DSP Labung said.
