It has been found that children are being used in the upgrading work of the Belhi Customs-Kushaha road located in Chanhi, Balan Bihul Rural Municipality-2, Saptari.
Gunja Construction, Khadak Municipality-8, Saptari, has been awarded the contract to upgrade the Belhi Customs-Kusha road.
Here, workers usually earn between Rs 800 and Rs 1,000. However, the construction company's owner, Govinda Prasad Mandal, is paying children Rs 400 to Rs 600 to do the work.
It has been found that children have been working as laborers since the upgrade of the Belhi Customs-Kusha road began. 'I come to work from 8 am. When I return in the evening, the contractor pays me Rs 500,' said a child working at the road construction site.
This road upgrade work has been going on for four days. 5/6 children are working as daily laborers in the construction. The construction company's owner denied the issue of using children as laborers. 'Children are not being used for work. They come with their fathers themselves,' he said, 'They have not even paid the fine, they return after eating.'
As per the agreement made by the Road Division Office Lahan on 26 Mangsir 2082, the road will be upgraded by 30 Asad 2083 with an investment of 20 million 713 thousand 72 rupees including VAT. Division Office Chief Dhruv Kumar Jha Construction said that children should not be used in construction work. 'I will stop using children immediately after understanding,' he said.
Rural Municipality Chairman Khemchandra Yadav said that if children are found to be used in road construction work, it will be done according to the law. 'I have not come to my knowledge about those matters. If they have done so, we will recommend action,' he said.
