The Birgunj Chamber of Commerce and Industry has expressed serious concern after fake Nepali rupee notes started appearing in the Birgunj market area recently. The association issued a statement on Tuesday, urging industrialists, businessmen and the general public to exercise special caution when dealing in cash.
The statement signed by the association's president, Hari Prasad Gautam, states that if awareness is not raised in time, the problem of counterfeit notes could become serious and severe in the future. "We request that you only check the notes carefully before making transactions," the statement said.
The association has stated that there are various signs to identify counterfeit notes as per the criteria set by the Nepal Rastra Bank. The statement states that if the paper of the note is excessively smooth, the color appears unusually dark or pale, the security thread appears to be sticking out from the outside, and the necessary markings are not visible when held up to the light, the note may be suspicious.
The association has also urged that transactions be made electronically instead of cash as much as possible. The statement has requested all parties to be responsible and aware, saying that the use of counterfeit notes increases economic crimes and can cause personal and institutional losses.
