Om Narayan Rai, who lives in London, has decided to support half of the hostel expenses of Om Prakash Das of Bode Barsain Municipality-10, Khadakpur, Saptari, who has secured a full scholarship in the MBBS entrance exam.
Rai of Sanodumma, Rural Municipality-5, in Bhojpur's Poubadung, has also provided Rs 50,000 for the hostel expenses for six months.
On Thursday, the amount was handed over to Om Prakash by 85-year-old Devan Das, a senior citizen of the same village. 'I have personally helped as much as I can with the aim of providing some help to financially disadvantaged and talented students to study MBBS,' Rai said. 'I have helped half the amount for the hostel expenses for the immediate period of six months, and I will provide additional assistance every six months for five years.'
A news report was published in 'Kantipur' about Om Prakash, who worked as an electrician to cover his education expenses and appeared in the MBBS entrance examination, facing a shortage of hostel expenses.
Rai, who has been living in London for about 25 years, helped Om Prakash after learning about the shortage. Rai has also been helping hardworking students in financial difficulties before.
Om Prakash has withdrawn his name from the Madhesi Dalit quota in the MBBS entrance examination conducted by the Medical Education Commission on October 15.
After spending Rs 100,000 on interest from villagers to get Om Prakash admitted to the college and to travel to Dang, the family was having trouble raising the monthly Rs 15,000 for hostel expenses.
When Om Prakash was admitted to Rapti Institute of Health Sciences in Dang on December 6, Rs 64,500 had been spent on deposits and other expenses, while Rs 13,500 for dress remains to be paid. They are also raising funds for copying books.
