Construction of the Bailey Bridge over the Tilabey River in the Gandak Canal, which could not be constructed due to a budget cut of Rs 30 million allocated in the last fiscal year, has now begun.
Suresh Prasad Sah, Information Officer and Engineer of Narayani Irrigation Management Office, Birgunj, said that the construction of the Bailey Bridge has started this week after the tender for the construction of the Bailey Bridge was re-called.
‘Three-four days ago, the contractor Mamata Enterprises and Construction Pvt. Ltd. Bhaktapur has started the work of cleaning the site and unloading the goods,’ he said, ‘The contract for the construction of the bridge was signed on Mangsir 29, 2082, and the bridge should be constructed and handed over by Jestha 1, 2083.’
The company has won the contract for the construction of the 48-meter-long Bailey Bridge for Rs 24.66 million, 812 and 17 paisa (including value-added tax). When the government cut the budget of most of the projects after the Genji movement, the budget for this bridge was also cut.
The existing concrete bridge on the approach road of the Gandak Canal, which connects the district headquarters Birgunj with the northwestern part of the district, was damaged by a flood two and a half years ago. The plan to build a Bailey Bridge on the river was abandoned last year after there was talk of building it last year, but in the end, the budget was not managed. Last year, a tender was called for the construction of the Bailey Bridge.
A tender of Rs 33 million was called for the construction of a Bailey Bridge on the Tilabe River on the border of Birgunj Metropolitan City and Bahudarmai Municipality, and the joint venture company Medanta/Mohammad Islam had already won the contract for Rs 31.7 million. But since the budget for the construction of the Bailey Bridge was not assured, the plan to build the Bailey Bridge was uncertain.
The concrete bridge on the approach road to the Gandak Canal, which is one of the busiest roads in the district, has been left in its current state for two and a half years without being built. The current Bailey Bridge has been constructed as an alternative.
