The family of 32-year-old Umesh Khang of Gorpar, Kanchanrup Municipality-3, Saptari, who died after being crushed to death while working, has been devastated.

He, who was working as a wage laborer, had reached Rupnagar in Ward 12 on Friday to repair the roof. While working on the roof in extremely cold and windy conditions, Umesh's hands and legs stopped moving. After fainting, he was taken to Dhameshwor Hospital for treatment, but treatment was not possible there. He died on the way to Kanchanpur Hospital for further treatment. After Umesh's death, his wife Daropati Kumari and 19-day-old daughter Neha Kumari were left devastated.

'He was the breadwinner of the family. Yesterday, despite the extreme cold, he went to work worried about the roof and the lack of warm clothes for his newborn daughter,' said Daropati Kumari. 'We live in a hut built on private land.' He used to work in a thin jacket and half pants instead of thick clothes.'

Daropati Kumari said that he left home on Friday, saying that he would buy warm clothes for his daughter with the wages he earned from his work. 'He thought about buying warm clothes for himself many times, but he didn't because he didn't have enough money,' she said. 'After my daughter was born, he would say, 'I will buy her first, and then I will take it.' However, even while working as a daily wage laborer, she said that she could not buy warm clothes as her wages were not enough to pay off the loan she had taken from the villagers and to cover her expenses.

Daropati Kumari is struggling to meet her daily expenses due to the grief of her husband's death. On top of that, she is worried about raising her newborn daughter alone in the freezing cold and covering her expenses. After Umesh's cremation on Saturday, her nephew, 7-year-old Kishore Kumar, is staying at Kiria.

Public Health Officer Ramsewak Yadav, who was working on the roof slope during the extreme cold, said that he died of frostbite while working on the roof slope. ‘After the cold stopped working, he was taken to Dhameshwor Hospital for treatment,’ he said, ‘Since treatment was not possible there, Khang died on the way to Kanchanpur Hospital.’

He said that due to the controversy in the municipality, clothes could not be distributed to the poor and needy this time even in the freezing cold. Ward Chairman Gulten Chaudhary said that he would visit the homes of the families who are extremely poor financially and get more information. ‘They are extremely poor Dalit families,’ he said, ‘What can be done, I will try.’
