With the increase in tourist activity in the once remote Thori rural municipality of the district, hotels with amenities are opening up in droves.

Thori is becoming a tourist destination after tourism activities started to flourish in the last four years with the construction of the Birgunj-Thori postal road.

More than a dozen resorts, hotels, and restaurants have come into operation in the Thori customs area in the last four years. Another half-dozen resorts, hotels, and other tourist structures are under construction.

Young businessman Sushant Singh Thakuri, who ran a restaurant called 'The Food Shack' after the Corona period, is now expanding his business and building 'The Thori Nature Resort'.

Having invested Rs 1.5 million in the restaurant, he has now invested Rs 3.5 million in the resort.

He has already built 7 villas (rooms), a reception hall with a capacity of 120 people, a swimming pool, and more on his ancestral one and a half bighas of land. In addition, he plans to add infrastructure including a spa and gym.

He is now giving the resort its final shape and planning to invest another Rs 10 million in it. ‘The finishing work is currently in the final stages,’ he said, ‘if an additional Rs 10 million is invested, the resort will be ready as planned.’ He said that he is also building a resort in Thori, which is near the Indian border, targeting Indian customers.

He said that in the last four years alone, a dozen hotels, resorts, restaurants, and other small and large ones have come into operation in Thori, and half a dozen are under construction. He said that about Rs 500 million more has been invested in the hotel and tourism business here alone.

Currently, 70 percent of the tourists who come to Thori are Indians and 30 percent are domestic tourists. He said that tourists from Jamunia, Narkatiyagunj, Bettiah, Lauria, Motihari, and Patna in India come to Thori.

Birgunj businessman Zimdar Raut Kurmi, who has completed the construction of a hotel called ‘Lords of Thori’ in Thori-3 Nayabasti with an investment of Rs 12.5 million and is preparing to operate it, said that he was attracted to invest here because he saw good tourism potential in Thori.

He has built a hotel with 8 rooms, a bar and a swimming pool. He said that he plans to operate the hotel within a month. He said that he took up this business after seeing the lack of quality hotels in Thori.
