After the death of Ana Bahadur Ale Magar of Swarna Tole, Rajbiraj Municipality-5, Saptari, who earned his living by working as a wage laborer, the family is finding it difficult to meet their daily expenses.
Magar died last Friday evening at the age of 72.
His wife Deepa, 62, said that despite negotiating with neighbors and relatives for four days, she had no choice but to seek a loan for her future expenses. ‘So far, the 14,000 rupees that she negotiated have been spent,’ she said, ‘I have started to pay for the rent for 13 days.’
Her family has been living in a tin hut built on public land there for three generations. Deepa said that the husband and wife have not been able to save a single rupee while raising their three daughters by working as wage laborers. ‘After the death of her husband, it is already difficult to make ends meet, and the pain of not being able to pay for the expenses of her deceased husband has added to the pain,’ she said. ‘Poverty is causing her a lot of trouble.’
The Magar family, which is struggling to survive the cold in a tin hut due to the cold wave, is suffering even more due to the lack of expenses. Their eldest daughter Nisha is married. After Magar’s death, her younger daughter Inisha, 18, and her younger daughter Erika, 16, have been living in Kariyaputri.
Due to the tradition of allowing Kariyaputri to live separately, Deepa is forced to live outside under a tarpaulin during the cold wave. ‘The tradition has to be kept. There is only one hut, I am making a fire outside and surviving the winter as best I can,’ Deepa said.
