Due to the freezing cold weather that has been increasing for the past few days, local authorities have started giving holidays to schools.
Chandranagar Rural Municipality has declared a holiday for all community and institutional schools in the rural municipality from Sunday to Poush 25 after the cold weather made it difficult to conduct classes.
Since Poush 26 and 27 are public holidays, the rural municipality has announced that schools will resume regular operations from Poush 28.
Similarly, Hariban Municipality has also declared a winter holiday from Poush 16, stating that the extreme cold and cold wave will adversely affect the health of children. The municipality has requested all community and institutional schools to implement the holiday and inform the education department of the necessary details.
According to both these local levels, the decision to grant the holiday was made keeping in mind the health safety of students as the cold weather is likely to continue for a few more days. After the number of students started to decrease due to the extreme cold, the local levels had also started taking initiatives for the holiday. Parents have also been urged to dress their children warmly and be vigilant about their health.
Due to the increasing cold weather with the onset of Poush, the number of students in other local level schools is also decreasing. Students say that it is difficult to bear the cold in rooms without doors due to the zinc roof. They complained that water was leaking from the zinc while they were studying in the classroom.
The bitter cold that has begun since the beginning of December is making life in the Terai region extremely difficult. As the cold increases, children, the elderly, the disabled and people from the underprivileged groups are being affected the most.
