What you should know

The bitter cold has severely affected the lives of people in Madhesh. At a time when it is uncomfortable to stay at home, those who do not have a home are forced to live under tents.

A Musahar family in Lahan Municipality-15, Bano, was forced to live under a tarpaulin instead of a house.

Shyam Saday, a member of the Musahar community, who is considered the most economically disadvantaged among the Dalit community, has a family of five, including his wife Bimala and three young daughters. They previously had a thatched hut. However, a storm in April destroyed their shelter.

Shyam and Bimala make a living by hauling ballast in the nearby Khuti Khola. For this family, who are struggling to make ends meet with the income they earn from selling ballast, building a house from it has become a distant dream.

As a result, they have to put up a tarpaulin in the same place where they had their house before and cover it with straw and cloth. However, from now on, this family will not have to spend such a difficult night. Because the municipality has built a house for this family.

Lahan Municipality mobilized the municipal police on Saturday and built a house for this Musahar family in one day using materials such as wood, bamboo, and zinc. 'Saturday is also a holiday,' said Lahan Mayor Prasad Chaudhary, 'We made good use of this day by building his house.'

According to Mayor Chaudhary, he had learned three days ago that the family was forced to spend the night under a tarpaulin even in winter due to lack of a house. 'I felt bad hearing this, so we immediately started planning to build his house,' he said, 'The state is helping such weak citizens, that's what we did.'

However, this house was built as a temporary emergency and initiatives will be taken for a concrete house soon, said Mayor Chaudhary. The family, who had been living under a tarpaulin, is happy to be able to stay at home.

'Let alone a day, it was difficult for us to spend the night like that, every minute was difficult, but now it's not so sad,' said Shyam, 'I am grateful to the municipality, I hope that a concrete house will also be built soon.'
