A community dog sterilization campaign has begun in Birgunj. 14 community dogs were sterilized on Saturday.

The campaign was launched jointly by the Sumarga Binduama Foundation, an animal rights awareness group active in Birgunj, and the Nepal Veterinary Association Madhesh Province. The foundation's president, Pratibha Koirala, said that the campaign had to be launched as the number of community dogs in the metropolis has been increasing year by year.

There are more than 10,000 community dogs in all 32 wards of the metropolis, but their conflicts with humans are increasing, posing a risk to both dogs and humans, she said. 'Incidents such as locals beating dogs, throwing hot water at them, dogs falling prey to various diseases, and dogs getting injured and dying in road accidents are continuously happening,' she said. 'If the number of community dogs is controlled, such conflicts will decrease and incidents of cruelty to dogs will also decrease.'

Nepal Veterinary Association Madhesh Province President Dr. Dinesh Tiwari said that the homework to start this campaign has been going on for a long time and it is now possible. He said that the target was to sterilize at least 20 community dogs on the first day, but due to technical reasons, only 14 were possible. He said that since dogs are man's oldest friend, they can be used for human welfare with love and not in a brutal way.

Dr. Sudeep Sharma, secretary of the Association and a doctor at the Animal Services Branch of the Birgunj Metropolitan City Office, who participated in the sterilization work, claimed that the number of community dogs in the metropolis will gradually be controlled with this campaign. He also said that this campaign will be run on a weekly basis.
