Illegal mining has not stopped in Khando River located in Deuri Bharuwa, Rajbiraj Municipality-13, Saptari.
Local traders have been illegally extracting riverine materials from the river since Saturday morning using 8/10 tractors. Eyewitnesses said that more than 100 trolleys of sand had been extracted by Saturday afternoon alone. ‘We should be beaten up for speaking out,’ said a local, ‘Yesterday, the municipality employees turned away after seeing the excavation in the river. Excavation has been going on since morning today as well.’
He alleges that illegal excavation is being carried out in the river with the connivance of the municipality employees. ‘The municipality does not allow excavation when the common man needs one or two trolleys of sand. But even when the traders are excavating up to 200 trolleys daily, the employees are silent,’ he added, ‘The atmosphere in the village is bad. If someone complains about the excavation, they will be beaten, so I am silent.'
Local businessmen are illegally excavating the river by placing a loader (soil cutting and loading machine) in the river 150 meters south of the Khando bridge on the Rajbiraj-Hanumannagar road section.
Acting Mayor Israt Parbin said that despite repeated invitations for bids for the excavation of riverine materials from the Khando river, no one has submitted a bid. 'It may not be the connivance of the employees here, but some locals forcefully excavate the river illegally,' she said. 'I am coordinating with the police to take control of those who are doing such illegal work.' Chief District Officer Tubaraj Pokharel said that work is being done to understand the matter.
