Sugarcane farmers in the district have announced a protest against the syndicate imposed by sugar factories to purchase sugarcane. The farmers are angry that the syndicate has taken away their freedom to sell sugarcane to sugar mills in other districts.
The farmers have declared a protest, saying that the sugar industries of Rautahat, Bara, Parsa and Sarlahi have decided to purchase only sugarcane from their districts by mutual consent and are trying to hurt the sugarcane farmers by forming an alleged syndicate. The farmers gathered at Bijaypur Municipality-9, Bijaypur, Fatuwa in the district on Wednesday and demanded the immediate abolition of the syndicate.
Ashok Yadav, President of the Sugarcane Producers Association, Rautahat, said that farmers should be allowed to sell sugarcane to the industry they want, otherwise it will cause big problems later. ‘There should be an open market for farmers. We do not accept the implementation of the syndicate,’ he said, ‘It is a complete injustice not to be able to sell sugarcane from one district to another. If this is not corrected, we will protest strongly.’ After the closure of the largest Shreeram Sugar Mill in the district, only Baba Baijunath Sugar and Chemicals Industries in Katahariya is currently operating. The mill’s operator Baiju Babara claimed that the talk of the syndicate is baseless.
Farmers from Dharampur area of the district used to sell sugarcane to Sarlahi and farmers from Bijaipur area to Reliance Sugar Mill in Bara. After the industrialists were told to buy only sugarcane from their own district, farmers were not allowed to sell to Sarlahi and Bara. If they depend on a single industry, they will not be able to operate on time and if they do get it, there will be problems taking it to the mill, so they should be able to sell sugarcane as they see fit, said Rajkaran Rai, a farmer from Bijaipur.
The farmers have formed a struggle committee. In the first phase, the committee will submit a memorandum to the District Administration Office, and if their demands are not heard, the committee has warned of a phased protest. The freedom of farmers to sell sugarcane to sugar mills in other districts has been taken away by the syndicate, said the chairman of the struggle committee, Gyanendra Prasad Yadav.
There are currently 6,000 sugarcane farmers in the district. The number of sugarcane farmers has decreased recently, said the chairman of the association, Ashok Yadav.
