With plans to purchase rice from December 20, the Birgunj branch of the Food Management and Trading Company Limited has started distributing tokens to farmers from Tuesday for the purchase of rice this year.

On Tuesday, the first day, 38 farmers took tokens, informed Pankaj Jha, the branch chief.

He said that a minimum of 20 to a maximum of 40 quintals of rice were distributed to the farmers. Jha said that after the tokens are distributed in this way, rice from 10 farmers will be purchased daily.

‘While purchasing rice at the rate of 10 farmers daily, bookings for rice purchase have been made until Poush 9 based on the tokens distributed on Tuesday,’ he said, ‘We have adopted this method so that farmers interested in selling rice for food can sell rice easily.’

Those who came to collect tokens on Tuesday are farmers from various municipalities in Parsa and Bara. Along with Birgunj Metropolitan City, farmers from Kalikamai, Bindabasini, Patervasugauli Rural Municipality and Bahudarmai, Parsagarhi Municipality have also come. Farmers from Parwanipur, Prasauni, Karaiyamai Rural Municipality in neighboring Bara have also collected tokens.

There is a provision that farmers who come to collect tokens must bring a recommendation from the agriculture branch of the concerned municipality. Jha said that the branch aims to distribute tokens to 250 farmers for the purchase of paddy this year. He said that the center has given a quota of 10,000 quintals of paddy to the Birgunj branch this year.

This year too, the branch plans to purchase only Sona Mansuli paddy. Since the federal government has fixed the support price of Sona Mansuli paddy at Rs 3,628.33 per quintal this year, the branch will also purchase at the same price.

Last year, the branch had received a quota of 42,000 quintals of paddy. But after getting a good price from the private sector, the branch did not come to sell the targeted quantity of paddy. This year, the price given by the food department is about Rs 600 per quintal higher than the price currently being given by the private sector.

Last year, the branch had a target of purchasing 32,000 quintals of Sona Mansuli and 10,000 quintals of cumin milled paddy. But even though a quota is allocated for the purchase of cumin fine rice every year, farmers are not buying this rice, so this year only Sona Mansuli rice is being purchased.
