Police reopen blocked East-West Highway

What you should know

The East-West Highway, which was blocked since Saturday afternoon, has reopened after about an hour and a half. Relatives of the deceased in a road accident near Mothiyahi Bridge in Chandranigahapur, Rautahat, had closed the highway demanding compensation.

The situation became tense for some time after the relatives of the victim started pelting stones at the police. Locals of Chandranigahapur were also stoned. The locals and the police jointly cleared the blocked road.

After the victim side and stakeholders failed to reach an agreement during the discussion on compensation, the police had warned those blocking the road. During that time, the protesters had attempted to misbehave with DSP Rupa Labung of the Area Police Office Chandranigahapur. Despite DSP Labung's repeated requests to seek legal redress and come to an agreement, the police tried to use normal force when they refused. But the situation became tense when the protesters started pelting stones indiscriminately.

The locals supported the police after the stones thrown by the protesters hit them. After that, the protesters dispersed.

On Friday evening, in the Chapur-Gaur section near Mothiyahi Bridge in Chandrapur Municipality-6, a bus (Na 4 Kha 6547) coming from Gaur to Chandranigahapur collided with a motorcycle (Na 39 Pa 4240) going in the opposite direction. After the incident, the family of the deceased and the bus operator discussed the issue of compensation at the Area Police Office Chandranigahapur. An agreement could not be reached after the victim demanded more than the amount prescribed by law.

The deceased Patel's two sons and a daughter were riding the motorcycle. According to the police, Patel's son Yubaraj, 12, suffered injuries on his forehead, his daughter Aakriti, 11, suffered injuries on her legs and head, and his son Prince Kumar, 15, suffered injuries on his legs, arms, and forehead.

The police have arrested the bus driver, Amrit Bahadur BK, of Chandrapur-8. District Police Chief SP Rabin Karki said that despite attempts to negotiate with the victim and clear the way, no agreement could be reached.
