An elderly man who was guarding a field at night to graze harvested rice in Pipra East, Kanchanrup Municipality-5, Saptari, has died after being attacked by an elephant.

On Wednesday, 65-year-old Narayan Khang was attacked by a wild elephant while sitting in a hut built in a field after nightfall while harvesting paddy. His body was found mauled to death by an elephant on Thursday morning, said DSP Madhav Prasad Kafle, Chief of the Area Police Office, Kanchanpur.

The elephant attacked him while he was sitting in a hut in a field two kilometers from his home. He had even tried to escape after starting to vandalize the hut. His body was found some distance from the hut. The elephant attacked him while chasing him while destroying the hut, said the deceased's wife Janaki Devi. 'He sent us home after staying in the field, saying that he would take the paddy home by tractor in the morning,' she said. 'No one thought that the elephant could come at night.'
