Locals of Choharwa Naya Chowk have staged a protest demanding the reconstruction of structures and drains that were demolished during the expansion of the four-lane highway from Kamala in Siraha to Kanchanpur in Saptari.

Locals blocked the highway on Tuesday and demanded that a two-way drain be built along with the demolished parks and bus stops. Similarly, locals are demanding that a six-lane highway and an underpass be built in Choharwa, saying that this is also the route to the Siraha district headquarters, which will cause heavy traffic.

Local Amarnath Yadav said that they were forced to take to the streets after they repeatedly appealed to the Kamala Kanchanpur Road Planning Office, Mirchaiya, and the construction company for help, but to no avail. 'The chowk has become deserted due to the collapse of the old structure. If there is no drain, this chowk will be flooded during the rainy season,' he said. 'There is heavy traffic here, so a six-lane highway and an underpass are necessary.'

Locals have also warned that they will launch a tough struggle if their demands are not addressed. Meanwhile, the planning office and the construction company have been saying that they cannot do more work than the approved design and estimate.
