Police in Bara have stopped a child marriage between a Chinese and a Muslim girl. The bride and groom and the bride's father were taken into custody on Wednesday midnight in Karaiyamai Rural Municipality-1, Haraiya while a Chinese citizen was performing a child marriage with a Nepali minor from the Muslim community.

They have been kept at the District Police Office, Kalaiya, and further investigation is underway, said Superintendent of Police Narendra Kunwar.

Their names have not been disclosed. ‘But is it a mismatched and child marriage, or not? And a thorough investigation is underway to find out the purpose of the marriage,’ he said. He said that according to initial investigations, the Chinese national has a passport and visa.

‘The bride and groom were brought from the village at midnight,’ he said. ‘For the past few years, there have been reports of Muslim women marrying Chinese nationals in the area, so we are conducting a thorough investigation into this matter.’

According to local residents, although the custom of marrying in India has existed in Madhesh since long, incidents of marriages with Chinese nationals are new. This marriage has surprised many in the village. According to a local resident, such marriages are arranged by middlemen under financial inducement. It has been found that 3 marriages have taken place with Chinese nationals in the village in the past year.

The bride's father, Zakir Hussain, a Chinese citizen and the bride were arrested. Public representatives had reached the police to release them. According to Ward Chairman Sonalal Sah, the Chinese citizen came to the bride's house with the intention of getting married. Ward Chairman Sah said that although there is a legal provision for marriage when the boy is 22 years old and the girl is 20 years old, the girl is 18 years old.

'I am also surprised by this new type of marriage,' he said. Ward Chairman Sah said that the bride's relatives were living in Kathmandu and the marriage was arranged in the village through their access there.
