Marijuana cultivation has recently started to flourish in the Chure region of Sarlahi. In this physically remote area, farmers have started cultivating marijuana commercially in collusion with the police. Businessmen are also investing in marijuana cultivation.
Locals have been cultivating marijuana with confidence after receiving police support in this Chure settlement on the border of Sindhuli and Sarlahi. Locals say that some traders have been cultivating marijuana, which is a drug, even by taking farmers' land under contract. When marijuana becomes diseased, traders have been calling experts from India to take care of it.
Locals say that commercial marijuana cultivation in Chure has been declining after the police launched eradication campaigns from time to time, but recently this cultivation has started to flourish. They informed that marijuana cultivation is expanding in collaboration with the police. Three years ago, the police reached most of the marijuana in Chure and destroyed it, but since then marijuana eradication has stopped. Patharkot, Parwanipur and Kalinjor police posts have been established for Chure. But a local said that they are happy with the collaboration when they should take initiatives to control it.
‘Commercial cannabis cultivation has started to flourish in Chureko Pakho Bari. Farmers are attracted to it because it offers better income than other crops,’ he said. ‘Farmers who were disappointed due to the uprooting are now happy, and they are also getting support from the police.’
Cannabis produced in places like Narayankhola, Satrakatha, Bhalukhop is being transported to India through the district’s rural roads for sale. The police have also seized such cannabis from time to time. A few years ago, the police had also found a cannabis processing center in Narayankhola. A large amount of cannabis was seized from there.
Police spokesperson Deputy Superintendent of Police Saroj Rai said that they had received information about cannabis cultivation and that homework was being done to uproot it.
