It is estimated that rice production in Madhesh Province will decrease by about 20 percent this year due to drought and unseasonal rains occurring twice a month during the harvest season.

Jitendra Yadav, head of the Directorate of Agriculture Development, Janakpur, said this at a provincial-level agricultural technical group workshop organized at the Directorate of Agriculture Research, Parawanipur. Yadav said that the drought in Madhesh during the rice planting season had already reduced paddy cultivation by 13 percent, while the two rains during the rice planting season have had a major impact on production.

Madhesh Province normally produces about 1.3 million metric tons of paddy, but this year it is estimated that only about 1 million metric tons will be produced.

Out of the 372,645 hectares of cultivable land in eight districts of Madhesh, only 87 percent of the area has been sown with paddy this year.

Secretary of the Ministry of Land Management, Agriculture and Cooperatives, Umesh Dahal, said at the seminar that the Madhesh Province government is moving towards increasing productivity by mechanizing the agricultural sector. The state government is using the best technologies available. Stating that the agricultural sector is being managed using the latest technology, he said that enhancing the skills of technicians is leading to improving the overall agricultural sector.

Dr. Bishwer Prasad Yadav, Chief of the Directorate of Agricultural Research, Madhesh Province, said that the seminar was organized to increase the skills of agricultural technicians working at the provincial level and reduce costs in agriculture and increase productivity.
