Landless people of Sarlahi protested in Malangwa, the district headquarters, on Wednesday, demanding the continuation of the Land Commission. They have also submitted a five-point memorandum to the Survey Office, Malangwa, against the abolition of the commission.
They protested saying that they were deprived of land after the commission was abolished while the process of resolving the problem of the landless was underway. Led by the Land Rights Forum, the landless people sat on a dharna in front of the survey office from Shahid Chowk, shouting various slogans.
The landless people reached the survey office carrying placards such as "Stop the manipulation of landless people, give them deeds instead of assurances, when will landless people get their land?" and "Continue the work of the Land Commission."
The landless people who reached the survey office also submitted a 5-point memorandum to the office chief Sanjay Manandhar against the abolition of the commission. Bhawani Ghimire, the president of the forum, said that since thousands of landless people have been deprived of land, they have had to organize a vigilance program for the continuation of the work of the commission.
According to the Land Rights Forum, there are 6,459 landless Dalits, 8,752 landless squatters, 30,828 unorganized settlements and 1,290 incomplete and inadequate settlements in Sarlahi alone.
