Madhesh Chief Minister Sonal to seek confidence vote on Kartik 22

What you should know

Madhesh Province Chief Minister Jitendra Prasad Sonal is set to seek a vote of confidence from the Madhesh Province Assembly on Kartik 22. The decision to seek a vote of confidence was made after a meeting with Chief Minister Sonal and the ruling parties. However, the Province Assembly has not been formally informed about the vote of confidence yet.

JSP Nepal Chief Whip Ram Ashish Yadav informed that it has been decided to take a vote of confidence on Kartik 22 from the meeting of the parties participating in the government and then expand the cabinet. According to him, preparations are underway to request the Congress and UML for a vote of confidence.

Maoist Parliamentary Party Deputy Leader Yubaraj Bhattarai also reiterated the same. He said that many things were clear at the time of forming the government, so the cabinet will be expanded immediately after taking the vote of confidence.

Sonal was appointed Chief Minister with the support of 56 members of the Provincial Assembly from 5 parties. Now the government is also going to be supported by the Civil Liberation Party and Rizwan Ansari's Nepal Federal Socialist Party. Both parties have one member each in the Provincial Assembly. With the support of these two parties, it seems that the Sonal government will get 57 votes.

There are currently 104 members of the Provincial Assembly in the 107-member Provincial Assembly. The Sonal-led government needs a majority of the members (53 members) remaining in the Provincial Assembly to have a majority.

The government includes 18 members from JSP Nepal, 13 from Janmat Party, 9 from Maoist Center, 8 from LSP, 7 from CPN (Unified Socialist), and one each from Nagarik Unmukti Party and Nepal Federal Socialist Party.

The largest party, UML, the second largest party, Congress, and the Janaswaraj Party, formed by splitting from Janmat, intend to remain in the opposition.
