More than 70 people were injured when a stray dog bit them in front of Kalaiya Provincial Hospital. The dog, which was roaming the streets on Tuesday afternoon, was biting people indiscriminately.
The dog bit and injured someone walking on the road during the Chhath festival along with Tihar.
The incident has been going on since noon, but the dog has not been brought under control yet. Bhulan Sah, head of the Environment and Disaster Management Branch of Kalaiya Sub-metropolitan City, said that the dog could not be brought under control as the municipality did not have a dog capture net. According to him, the net was handed over to the Animal Husbandry Office and control was not possible as today was a holiday.
The dog ran for 1 km from Barewa Durbar near the hospital to Dakshin Barewa High School and bit him. At least 70 people, including former vice president of the Federation of Nepali Journalists Rakesh Pandey, were injured in the dog bite. DSP Vijayraj Pandey, spokesperson of the District Police Office, said that 52 of the injured are undergoing treatment at the Kalaiya Hospital. He claimed that the dog's identity has been identified and a search operation is underway.
Former Vice President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists Pandey said that 18 people had reached Birgunj Hospital for anti-rabies injections. The injured reached Birgunj even as Kalaiya Hospital did not have such injections. ‘I have reached Narayani Hospital in Birgunj because I was seriously injured after being bitten by a dog,’ said former Vice President Pandey. ‘The dog jumped on me and bit me while I was riding my bike.’
After the incident, he complained that the police chief and the mayor were not receiving calls several times. He also said that many people, including the elderly, were injured and their condition was painful.
