A clash broke out between police and businessmen in Sonarpatti, Janakpur on Friday night. Ten policemen and Surendra Bhandari, president of the Janakpurdham Chamber of Commerce and Industry, were injured in the clash.

The injured are being treated at the Provincial Hospital Janakpurdham. According to Chairman Bhandari's brother Balram Kumar Sah, his condition is normal.

DSP Ganesh Bahadur Bal said that after receiving information that gold and silver that had evaded customs was being sold in Sonarpatti, Janakpur, the Dhanusha police went to raid the place in coordination with the Revenue Investigation Department Pathlaiya. According to him, the police in plain clothes reached the jewelers run by Sanjay Thakur on the south side of the Janaki Temple. He said that the gold and silver traders tried to dispute after they recovered about 7 kg of silver without a bill from the jewelers.

According to DSP Bam, after they recovered 7 kg of silver and tried to get the leadership of the Gold and Silver Traders Association to sign a bond, a clash broke out after Janakpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Surendra Bhandari came and argued. ‘After the president of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry came, they took a firm stand not to let them take it away,’ DSP Balme said, ‘the clash broke out after the businessmen including him attacked the police.’

He said that the bill was not shown when asked and there was an argument when they tried to take it for investigation. Meanwhile, General Secretary of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Janakpur, Phuldev Pandit alleged that the police demanded exorbitant amounts of money on the eve of Dhanteras and Tihar and when they did not give it, there was an argument when they tried to take the gold and silver.

According to him, Sanjay Thakur, who used to work as a ‘craftsman’, has recently opened a new gold and silver shop. There, Thakur also makes jewelry for others. Initially, a policeman came to the shop in plain clothes on the pretext of making paju and asked to give all the silver there, which led to the argument. General Secretary Pandit said that the situation deteriorated when the police tried to take the silver. "When the businessmen approached and asked why they were doing this on the eve of Dhanteras, the police started lathi-charge," he said. He said the police then fired air-fire and tear gas.
