A tripartite agreement regarding waste management and environment protection was completed in Birgunj on Monday between Birgunj Metropolitan Municipality, Zero Waste Initiative Nepal and Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd.
A formal agreement has been signed for the project, which will be implemented with an investment of around four million rupees to make the waste management of Birgunj sustainable, scientific and environmentally friendly. According to the agreement, a waste treatment plant will be built at the city's waste management center with private investment.
After the construction work is completed, the said plant will be handed over to the Birganj Municipal Corporation. The agreement was signed by Aravindlal Karna, Chief Administrative Officer of the Metropolitan Corporation, Suresh Kaji Shrestha, Head of Industry of Surya Nepal and representatives of Zero Waste Initiative Nepal. After the
agreement, Birgunj Metropolitan Chief Rajeshman Singh said that this project will prove to be a cornerstone in achieving the long-term goal of making Birgunj a waste-free and green city. He said that the project will usher in a new era in plastic waste management and that the metropolis will move towards using waste as a resource rather than a problem.
Currently, the city's roads, squares and public places have been successfully kept clean, to further strengthen this campaign, the new garbage processing plant that is going to be built at the dumping site will separate plastic from the garbage collected from all over the city and reuse it, and arrangements will be made to produce fertilizer from organic waste, he said. Stating that the
agreement will take a historic leap in the waste management system, Mayor Singh asserted that it will improve the control of plastic waste and make a permanent contribution to environmental protection. Sureshkaji Maharjan, head of industry of Surya Nepal, said that after the completion of this project, Birgunj will take concrete and long-term steps towards becoming a "garbage-free, clean and green city". He said that Surya Nepal made this investment as part of social responsibility and said that the industry is responsible for both the society and the environment along with profitable business.
