Containers were 'diverted' to Birgunj after the northern border was blocked

What you should know

After frequent floods and landslides have blocked the northern border crossings of Tatopani and Rasuwa customs, the Chinese goods entering through these border crossings have been diverted to the Birganj border crossing.

There has been an increase in the number of containers carrying ready-to-wear clothes for festivals like Dasain and Tihar, entering through the Birgunj customs post even before Dasain. Kazibabu Koirala, Chief Customs Officer of Birganj Customs Office, said that since before Dasain, 5 to 7 containers of Chinese cloth have been collected daily from this customs  He said that the examination is being passed. "Daily 5 to 7 containers of Chinese clothes are being checked and passed," he said, "More Chinese clothes are being checked and passed than usual, the working people are also seen new, that's why we have assumed that the containers have been diverted from the northern border and have started entering through this border." Nepalese importers mostly import goods from Guangzhou. Chinese goods entering from the northern border are initially brought by train to Sigatse. Then it is brought to Nepal's checkpoints in trucks.

After the change of port, importers bring their cargo containers directly from Guangzhou by ship to Birgunj via the Indian port of Kolkata, which is close to Birgunj port. Similarly, some importers also bring goods from Bhairahawa and Biratgarh ports according to their own convenience.

Even under normal conditions, nearly half of the country's total import and export trade is exported through the Birganj border. Koirala says that the collection of this customs revenue in the months of August and October is comparatively encouraging as it is a festival month.

He said that this customs office, which is collecting revenue on an average of 72 million rupees per day, has been collecting revenue up to 84 million rupees per day in recent days.
