Birganj Metropolitan Municipality has started water testing keeping in view the risk of diarrhea and cholera infection in the metropolis. Suspecting that contaminated drinking water may be the main cause of the infection, the metropolis has started the process of sample collection and laboratory testing.
According to the Secretariat of Metropolitan Chief Rajeshman Singh, Metropolitan Ward no. 10, 11 and 12 have collected water samples from five different places within the stream. A technical team including microbiologist Ajay Mandal, environmental inspector Prakash Air has reached the suspected area and started the work of collecting tap water and testing it in the laboratory. From Monday, the city started collecting water samples and testing E. coli by itself.
The metropolis has established a modern laboratory at the drinking water treatment center in Ward No. 1 Chhapkaiya. Using a special kit provided by UNICEF, coliform testing has also been started. The initial results of the E coli test will come within 24 hours, while it will take about 72 hours to get the detailed report of the coliform test.
Once the results are received in time, it is immediately known in which area the contaminated water is flowing and it is easy to take necessary steps accordingly. At present, the metropolis is giving priority to tap water used in highly affected areas and is proceeding with testing. According to the need, samples from other suspicious places are also prepared to be collected and tested, Fuyal said.
