The Bhimsen Jatra of the Newar community of Birgunj was completed peacefully on Sunday night in Birgunj. Rath Yatra, which started at 7:30 PM, was completed at around 9:00 PM after distribution of Prasad.
About 300 security personnel from Nepal and Armed Police were deployed in view of possible clashes during the procession. According to tradition, on the day of Barseni Jatra, a procession takes place from Virta Mai temple with dolas. The Jatra starts from the main road of Virganj, passing through Gahwamai Temple, passing through Gahwa Tol and again reaching Virtamai Temple.
In the past, when the Jatra reached Gahwa, there used to be a clash between the youth groups of Virta and Gahwa when the youth tried to take away the dola. In addition to the Newar community, the non-Newar community is also present in the Jatra. During the Jatra, the participants chant 'Leo Leo, Payo Payo'.
The Newar community worships Bhimsen as a total deity. There is a religious belief that Jatra brings economic prosperity, prosperity, good health and health.
The Newar community of Terai's town rarely observes this Jatra, but the Newar community of Birganj is continuing the traditional Jatra.
