After all-round pressure, the Indian government has given 700 cusecs of water to the Gandak Canal. Narayani Irrigation Management Office Birganj Engineer and Information Officer Suresh Prasad Sah said that 700 cusecs of water has started coming into the canal since last three days.

"After we exerted all-round pressure, finally the Indian side has given 700 cusecs of water to the canal," he said. Although there is no demand from the farmers, water is going to the fields of Indian farmers from those branch canals.

After their pressure, the Indian side put sand in the mouth of the branch canal and closed the mouth, Sah said, 700 cusecs of water started coming towards Nepal. In the 45-year-old canal, the branch canals towards India are still operating without doors. Sah said that on the Nepal side, all the branch canals have been closed.

Sah said that after 700 cusecs of water started coming into the canal, the water of the canal has reached Rautahat district across Bara. "Across the Aruva river on the border of Bara and Rautahat, the water has reached to Block No. 13 of the canal in Rautahat, across the Bhakuwa river," he said. He said that after they did not agree, they had to monitor even at night.

There are 37,400 hectares of irrigated land under the canal, 16,000 hectares in Parsa and 9,000 hectares in Bara.  The rest is in Rautahat. But in Rautahat, canal water is often not enough. According to the Gandak agreement with India, India has not given that much water to the canal, which is supposed to give 850 cusecs of water.

About this problem, Sah says that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Indian Two Branch Canal Office have been writing several times and urging them to adhere to the Gandak Agreement honestly. According to the

agreement, the Indian side has to give 850 cusecs of water in the canal from June 15 for paddy crop and from January 10 for wheat crop. The Indian side releases water into the canal from the barrage built on the Nepal-India border at Bhainsalotan in Nawalparasi. After traveling 92 km in India, this canal enters Nepal from Jankitola in Jagarnathpur village of Parsa. The length of the Gandak Canal divided into 15 blocks in Parsa, Bara and Rautahat is 81 km towards Nepal.

Gandak barrage was built by India itself and the operation is also done by the Indian side.
