The farmers of Terai Madhes along with Sarlahi have started protesting after the government subsidy for sugarcane was cut. Farmers protested by burning tires in front of three sugar factories in Sarlahi on Tuesday demanding subsidy.

Farmers protested by burning tires in front of Indushankar Sugar Factory in Hariwan, Mahalakshmi Sugar Factory in Bagdah and Annapurna Sugar Factory in Dhankaul. They have also raised slogans against the government .

Sugarcane producer organizations have said that farmers had to go on strike after the amount received by the government as a subsidy of Rs. 70 per quintal for sugarcane was reduced. They complained that they only got half of the 16 million for last year's grant. On the one hand, the cost of sugarcane production is high, on the other hand, the farmers are suffering due to the reduction in subsidies.

Mayor Devendra Yadav of Godaita Municipality, who is also a sugarcane farmer, said that the farmers started protesting against the reduction of subsidy. He expressed his sadness that he was forced to take part in the agitation because the government was reluctant to address the legitimate demands of the sugarcane farmers. According to him, the government has put the farmers who work hard in the fields in a situation where they have to burn tires. "On the one hand, the cost of sugarcane is high and on the other hand, the farmers are suffering due to subsidy cuts, but the government is not understanding this problem of the farmers," he said, "We farmers are forced to protest."

The farmers sent a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the district administration office last Sunday. They have also announced that they will hold a huge demonstration in Kathmandu on August 8.

The Federation of Nepal Sugarcane Producers held a meeting in Hariwan on July 12 and demanded the government to encourage sugarcane cultivation. Sarlahi is in the leading position in the country in sugarcane production.
