Farmers have protested against the reduction of sugarcane subsidy. They announced a protest against the government by submitting a memorandum to the Prime Minister through the district administration office of the sugar industry district.
Naresh Singh Kushwaha, President of Sugarcane Farmers' Federation, Mahottari, said that the agitation was announced against the reduction of the subsidy received by the farmers from the Nepal government at the rate of 70 rupees per quintal.
At a time when the cost of sugarcane production is increasing, farmers are in trouble after the government cut subsidies. The government has not given the subsidy to the farmers last year. Grants have been cut in the budget of the current financial year. As the government is reluctant to address the demands of the farmers, we are preparing for the agitation," said President Kushwaha.
While submitting a memorandum to the Prime Minister through District Administration Office Mahottari on Sunday, he said that there is a program of burning tires in front of the sugar factory on Tuesday and a demonstration in Kathmandu on August 8.
President Kushwaha said that the struggle program was announced after the Nepal government did not pay the sugarcane subsidy for the financial year 081/082 at the rate of Rs.
The meeting of Nepal Sugarcane Producers Federation held on Monday 12th July 2082 in Sarlahi, Hariwan has demanded to encourage sugarcane farmers in sugarcane cultivation. Rajaram Mahato, a sugarcane farmer of Gaushala, Mahottari, said that there are problems such as lack of seeds of advanced varieties of sugarcane, lack of concessional loans, not getting food fertilizers easily, delay in payment of sugarcane, not getting proper price of sugarcane, and lack of technical support for sugarcane cultivation. According to him, the government has done injustice by cutting the subsidy even though the farmers cultivate sugarcane on their own land.
