A monitoring team of the federal government came to Birganj on Thursday to discuss the problems of Madhesh province, which has been declared drought-affected, and discussed with the stakeholders.

The team, whose coordinator is Sushil Ayarch, joint secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, discussed with the stakeholders of Parsa and Bara and got information about the problems here.

In a discussion aimed at identifying the problem and solving it, Chairman of District Coordination Committee Parsa Niranjan Sonar said that there are 22 overhead tanks in the district but only 5 are operational. He said that apart from Parsagadhi and Patervasugoli Rural Municipality, the other 12 municipalities of the district have dire conditions of both drinking water and agriculture. He said that although planting has been done in half a dozen municipalities near the Gandak Canal, it has not been easy in other municipalities.

Chairman of District Coordination Committee Bara Narendra Sah said that since this problem of drought and dryness is appearing regularly in Madhesh for the last three years, it is necessary to prepare before the calamity appears. He said construction of overhead tanks should be given priority.

Jalandhar Singh, head of Pacharuta municipality in Bara, suggested that water should also be taken from India for Chaite paddy crop in Gandak Canal. He argued that due to this, the water level in the area around the canal will be recharged. He also emphasized on improving the structure of Gandak Canal. Joint Secretary Acharya, coordinator of the

monitoring team, said that incomplete water supply and irrigation projects should be put into operation, tube wells should also be put into operation, the schedule of water coming into the Gandak canal should be changed, Chure should be protected and large ponds should be constructed in Chure area, and the bad condition of electricity voltage should be improved. He said that the monitoring team will submit its report within seven days after collecting the received suggestions and also collecting data from the concerned offices. The

monitoring team includes Deputy Director of Irrigation Management Division Basu Timalsena, Director General of Agriculture Department Prakash Kumar Sanjel, Deputy Director General of Water Supply Department Balamukund Shrestha and others. The team is scheduled to go to Sarlahi's Karmaiya on Thursday and have a similar discussion with the stakeholders there.
