To promote sustainable urban development, the deadline for the road upgrading work being carried out in Rajviraj Municipality of Saptari under the Nepal Urban Government and Infrastructure Project (NUGIP) has expired on Tuesday. However, so far only 60 percent of road upgrading work has been done.

With the help of the World Bank, NUGIP gave Rs. The municipality entered into an agreement with NNT Developers Pvt Ltd, Patna, India to do the work on June 5, 2081, and the construction company was given time to complete the road upgradation work by June 31, 2082. However, by the deadline on Tuesday, only about 60 percent of the road upgrading work has been done.

According to Ashok Kumar Das, engineer of the municipality, a total of 14.2 kilometers of roads will have to be upgraded along with drains at necessary places. But so far only 3 km of the road has been upgraded and paved. Even though the construction company is doing unorganized work, the municipality has not been able to pay attention. After the deadline was about to expire, the road upgradation work was being done by covering the notice board for a few days.

Engineer Das said that the process for extension has started. According to NUGIP, Engineer Das is the focal person on behalf of the municipality. However, Das has not been able to get his salary for three months as there is a dispute over the extension of his contract. "We have started the process for extending the term, but since we have not received the salary for three months, we could not work as we wanted," he said, "Please understand more in the municipality." "Don't mail a request, I will understand and inform the technician," he said. Harikishore Prasad Chandravanshi, the chief administrative officer, could not be contacted.

Information officer of NUGIP, Sangeeta Baral, said that no formal letter has been received regarding the extension of the deadline. "The deadline will be extended from there and we will receive information through a letter, but we have not been informed yet," she said.
